Dr. Yvonne Chandler, Associate Professor in the Department of Library and Information Sciences and President of the Texas Library Association was awarded a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. The title of her project is: "ELMS – Educating Librarians in the Middle South – Diversifying Librarianship for our Digital Future."

The University of North Texas' Office of Research and Economic Development has named Dr. Oksana Zavalina a 2013 Junior Faculty Fellowship. Dr. Zavalina's research project is titled User Searching in State-Level and Federal-Level Cultural Heritage Digital Libraries: A Comparative Analysis. The Department of Library and Information Sciences' school library media program is ranked within the top 10 programs in the nation for the first time. U.S. News & World Report ranked the program the 8th best in the nation, improving on last year's rating of 12th best. The general program of study in library science with school library certification prepares graduates to work in elementary, middle, and high school library settings. The LIS cohort program is coming to El Paso! The program offers students in west Texas access to a masters degree in library and information sciences from UNT. The cohort will admit a limited number of students and combine face-to-face meetings with a highly interactive online experience. The face to face component begins June 8-11, 2013. The American Library Association's Emerging Leaders Program enables newer library professionals to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. The 2013 class of Emerging Leaders includes LIS alumni Nathan Hall, Shannon Stark, and Berika Williams (Houston Program). The program culminates with a poster session presentation to display the results of the project planning work of each group at the Annual ALA Conference. Dr. Ana Cleveland has been selected as Fellow of the Medical Library Association. Dr. Cleveland will be recognized as one who has made outstanding contributions to the field of health science librarianship at the 2013 Annual Meeting in Boston on May 6th.

Dr. Jeonghyun (Annie) Kim, Edward Warga (MS '11), and Dr. William Moen presented their paper, "Digital curation in the academic library job market," at the ASIS&T 2012 Annual Meeting in October. The paper has been promoted on the ASIS&T Twitter and the study's key findings have been posted on the Library of Congress's digital preservation blog. The Daily Journal of Commerce recently named Cathryn Bowie, MS '93, the Unsung Legal Hero of the Year 2012. Cathryn is the law librarian for the State of Oregon Law Library. She considered law school before being mentored by a law librarian and ultimately earned her MS in library science at UNT LIS, taking advantage of the legal informatics and law librarianship program of study.
